좁은 골목길을 따라 걷다 보면 담벼락마다 색색의 벽화가 시선을 붙잡는다. 속초시 청호동에 자리한 아바이벽화마을은 6·25 한국전쟁 이후 고향 함경도로 돌아가지 못한 실향민들이 모여 일군 집단촌으로, 분단의 역사와 애환이 골목 곳곳에 깃들어 있다. 2015년 신수로 남쪽 골목길에 벽화가 조성되면서 실향민들의 그리움과 삶의 이야기가 그림으로 되살아났다. 마을 이름에 담긴 아바이는 함경도 방언으로 나이 든 남성을 뜻하는 말로, 고향을 그리워하던 어른들의 흔적이 마을 이름에도 남아 있다. 갯배 선착장 주변에는 드라마 가을동화의 포토존과 실향민 문화를 담은 전시물도 마련되어 있다. 골목을 다 둘러본 뒤에는 아바이순대, 함흥냉면, 가자미식해 등 함경도 전통 음식을 맛볼 수 있으며, 인근 속초관광수산시장과 속초시립박물관을 함께 둘러보는 코스로 이어도 좋다.
