충청남도 태안군 근흥면 정죽리 성동산에 위치한 태국사는 창건연대는 미상이지만, 창건을 둘러싼 여러 가지 설화가 전해지고 있다. 일설에 따르면 조선조의 세종대왕 때 태안부사의 꿈에 안흥항의 바닷가에 상자 하나가 떠나려 와 있으니, 즉시 이를 가져다 잘 처리하라는 내용이었다. 꿈에서 깬 부사는 반신반의하면서 아침 일찍 바닷가로 내려가 주위를 살펴보니 현몽한 대로 상자 하나가 놓여 있었다고 한다. 금불상을 싼 보자기에는 기원 태평 ‘국운’이라 쓰여 있었다고 하며, 이를 보고 기이하게 여긴 부사는 이 내용을 즉시 국왕께 상주하니 국왕께서 특명을 내려 승려를 현지에 파견하였다. 왕명을 받고 현지에 내려온 승려는 곧 터를 잡아 절을 세우고 명칭을 보자기에 쓰여 있는 태평 국운에서 ‘태(泰)’와 ‘국(國)’자를 따라 ‘태국사(泰國寺)’라 명명하고, 금불상을 안치하니 이것이 오늘의 태국사라고 전해진다.

면천향교는 다른 지역의 향교들과 달리 최초 창건 위치를 이동하지 않은 몇 개 안 되는 향교이다. 현재의 위치는 신증동국여지승람의 군에서 동쪽으로 2리 떨어져 있다는 기록과도 일치하고 있다. 세운 시기는 정확하게 알 수 없지만 태조 1년(1392)에 세웠다고 전한다. 창건 이후의 면천향교 변화를 알 수 있는 최초의 기록은 1716년(숙종 42년) 학교등록의 기사로, 면천향교의 대성전 서벽과 신문을 수리한 사실이 적혀있다. 1980년대 이후의 향교 보수로는 1983년 대성전 보수, 1985년 명륜당 보수, 1986년 동서재 보수가 이루어졌다.
향교 건물의 배치는 앞쪽에 배우는 공간으로 강당인 명륜당과 학생들의 기숙사인 동재, 서재가 있고, 뒤쪽에 제사 지내는 공간으로 대성전과 동무, 서무가 있는 전학후묘의 형태를 따르고 있다. 대성전 안쪽에는 공자를 비롯한 중국과 우리나라 선현들의 위패를 모시고 있다. 대성전 좌우에 있는 동무와 서무는 규모와 형식이 같은 건물인데 앞면 3칸, 옆면 1칸 규모이다. 지붕은 옆면에서 볼 때 사람 인(人)자 모양인 맞배지붕으로 꾸몄다. 이외의 건물로 내삼문과 외삼문 등이 있다. 이곳에서는 해마다 음력 2월과 8월에 제사를 지낸다.

💡 개요

남포관아문은 조선시대 여지도서(輿地圖書)에 의하면 남포읍성의 관아 건물이다. 이전에는 객사(客舍), 동헌(東軒), 아사(衙舍), 향청(鄕廳), 작청(作廳), 현사(縣司) 등 많은 건물이 있었으나, 현재는 진서루와 내삼문, 외동헌이 남아있다.
남포현 관아의 정문으로 사용되었던 관아문은 정면 3칸 측면, 2칸의 2층 문루 건물로 아래는 출입구, 위는 누마루를 설치하고, 팔작지붕이다. 조선왕조의 중앙 집권을 상징하기 위해 당시 전국에 똑같이 만들어진 관아문 양식을 충실히 따르고 있으며 ‘진서루(鎭西樓)’라는 현판이 걸려있다.
진서루는 외삼문으로 옛 남포현의 출입문이다. 낮은 기단 위에 세워진 2층 문루인데, 앞면 3칸, 옆면 2칸 규모이며, 지붕 옆면이 여덟 팔(八)자 모양인 팔작지붕집이다. 아래층은 삼문을 달았고, 2층은 누마루를 깐 후 4면에 난간을 세웠다.
동헌의 출입문인 내삼문은 정면 7칸 측면 1칸인데, 중앙은 솟을대문 1칸이 있어 출입구 역할을 하였고, 건물의 정면에는 옥산아문(玉山衙門)이라는 현판이 걸려있다.
남포현의 업무를 보던 외동헌은 앞면 7칸, 옆면 3칸 규모의 팔작지붕 건물이다. 앞면 중앙에 2칸의 대청이 있고 좌우는 온돌방으로 꾸몄다.

💡 개요

홍성방조제는 홍성과 보령을 이어주는 방조제로 이곳을 통해 3월까지도 맛볼 수 있는 보령 천북의 굴을 먹기 위해 건너가기도 하는 곳이다. 홍성군 홍성방조제에는 수룡항포구가 있고 홍성·보령 방조제 준공 기념탑이 있다. 준공 기념탑 주차장에 차를 세우고 주변을 둘러보면 서쪽 바다에는 안면도가 수평선 위에 거대한 섬처럼 떠 있다. 또한, 준공탑 안쪽으로 걸어 들어가 전망대에서 바라보면 홍성방조제와 죽도, 남당항 등 서해의 전경이 한눈에 들어온다. 준공탑옆에 있는 풍력발전기도 또 다른 장관을 연출한다. 홍성방조제 수룡항포구 쪽으로 내려가면 좀 더 가까이서 바다 풍경을 감상할 수 있다. 홍성방조제에서 보령 쪽으로 넘어오면 천북굴단지와 바로 연결된다. 서해랑길 63코스에 속하는 이곳은 남당항, 속동전망대와 연결되는 서해안 도보 여행 코스이기도 하다.

💡 개요

속동전망대는 홍성 해안의 명소로 어사 포구와 궁리 중간의 임해관광 도로변 바닷가에 2005년에 세워졌다. 전망대에 오르면 확 트인 천수만이 한눈에 바라보이며 바로 앞에는 모섬이라 불리는 작은 섬이 있다. 2012년 사진 찍기 좋은 경관 명소 조성을 통한 배모형의 포토존을 설치하여 마치 타이타닉 영화의 한 장면을 연상하게 한다. 전망대 옆에는 푸른 해송림이 바다와 어우러져 있고, 전망대 앞의 모섬까지는 언제나 섬에 오를 수 있도록 나무계단으로 이어져 있어 바닷가의 운치를 느낄 수 있다. 속동전망대에서 해송림을 지나 섬으로 향하는 길은 약 100m 정도 되며 전망대 밑은 깎아지른 절벽이어서 섬의 전망대는 거침없는 천수만의 풍광을 자랑한다. 또한 전망대에서 바라보는 낙조는 잊을 수 없는 추억을 만들어 준다.

💡 개요

전견훤묘는 후백제의 시조 견훤(甄萱:867∼935)의 것이라고 전해온다. 견훤의 원래의 성은 이(李)씨이며, 상주 사람으로 신라 장군 이자개의 아들이라 한다. 신라 진성여왕이 즉위하면서 몇몇 신하들의 횡포로 정치 기강이 문란해졌고, 또 기근이 심하여 백성들의 원망과 봉기가 심해졌다. 이때 견훤이 경주의 서남 주현(州縣)을 공격하니 이르는 곳마다 사람들이 호응하여, 마침내 진성여왕 6년(892)에 무진주(지금의 광주)를 점령하고 스스로 왕위에 올랐다. 그 뒤 완산주(지금의 전주)에 도읍을 정하고 후백제를 세워 40여 년간 다스렸다. 고려 태조 19년(936)에 황산불사(黃酸佛寺)에서 세상을 떠났으며, 죽을 때 전주 완산이 그립다고 유언을 하였으므로 완산을 향하여 묻었다고 한다. <삼국사기>에는 걱정이 심해 등창이 나 황산의 절에서 죽었다는 기록이 있으며, <동국여지승람>에는 견훤의 묘는 은진현의 남쪽 12리 떨어진 풍계촌에 있는데 속칭 ‘왕묘’라고 한다라는 기록이 있다. 커다란 봉분 앞에 1970년 견씨 문중에서 세운 비석이 서 있을 뿐 주변에는 아무 시설이 없고 남쪽으로 전주 뒷산이 70리 떨어져 잘 보이고 있다.
